We have a dependable, everyday automatic drip coffee maker. It is a high quality machine. I like it. It is a Cuisinart Coffee Maker, a 10-Cupper, with a nice thermal carafe. It does the job. But recently, we picked up a cheap Bodum French Press…under $20. No bells, no whistles, and frankly, we’ve been cheating ourselves for years. I had this idea that a french press was a persnickety thing. That it required patience and exactitude, which are a couple of things that I don’t have in the morning. But, the coffee is simply amazing (much smoother and richer than in the ADC). I can’t understand why we didn’t do this years ago. Mornings are just better with a french press. Enough said.

For years, I railed against decaf. Why would anyone drink decaf? It is like non-alcoholic beer. Sure, it can taste fine, but is it really beer? There is something essential missing. That is what I always thought about decaf. There was just something wrong about it. Something missing…something impure.

I like my coffee unadorned. No sugar, no cream. No cappuccino froth for me. Just the black stuff.

But know, as I get a little older (siiiiiiigh) and my body rebels at the idea at ingesting caffeine later in the day, decaf is now a reasonable choice. I remember when my mother drank decaf…it was Sanka. Thin and bitter, but somehow without any real taste at all, the brown water that my mother used to drink was so uninspiring. As we go through this coffee obsession of ours, let’s keep in mind that we’ve come a long way since Sanka and that we can have wonderful coffee…even without the caffeine.

This morning, like every morning, we wake up to the delightful tones of the coffee maker gurgling away in the kitchen. The aroma fills the entire downstairs. The enveloping scent is invigorating and comforting, and my hand travels immediately to my favorite mug…it holds 2 cups…and as I pour coffee into my cup I experience a small dose, transformative nonetheless, of Sunday morning joy. Another day begins…delicious.

Make some coffee…it is command, a mantra, a joy. This is our place to talk and revel in the thing we obsess about. COFFEE.

It is how we start our day. It is how we woo our potential mates. It is how we connect with our friends.
